Not Lifting A Finger
This idiom is used to indicate that while we may have received something of value, we didn’t do anything to help in the reception.
I honestly can’t think of anything else that describes what we have received from God. While we’ve done absolutely nothing, in response to our faith in Jesus Christ, we have received everything. And it’s been this way even back in the Old Testament, especially when God gave to Israel the Promised Land.
God said, “I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you–also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow. So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.” (Joshua 24:12-13)
In Zechariah 4:6 the Lord said, “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit.”
To the Apostle Paul the Lord said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness,” which brought this out by Paul, “I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NKJV)
And this goes to our very salvation.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Today we’re in need of God to do a work in our time, to rise up and save our nation.
And so, while we don’t need to lift a finger, we do need to lift up a prayer. Would you pray as the Psalmist who said, “Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.” (Psalm 44:26)
