Our Heart’s Desire

When our heart’s desire is for God’s salvation, then God withholds nothing and brings deliverance from our enemies.

This was king David’s experience.

“And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice! You have given him his heart’s desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips. For You meet him with the blessings of goodness.” (Psalm 21:1b-3a)

When David sought God’s salvation, God granted him what he requested, which included leadership, long life, victory, honor, gladness, and deliverance from his enemies.

Now, that’s some list. But it is also the same list we ask for every time we seek the Lord through the prayer Jesus taught us.

“Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.” (Matthew 6:9-13)

And so to receive God’s salvation and our heart’s desires, we need to ask.

Jesus said, “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Luke 11:9-10)

The Apostle James said, “You do not have because you do not ask.” (James 4:2b)

Our problem is that we don’t ask, and when we do ask it’s not for God’s salvation or His glory, rather it’s for our own glory.

“You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” (James 4:3)

And so let’s seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33), and when we do, God’s promise is that all these blessing of goodness will be ours.
