Empty Handed

Empty Handed

More often than not we spiritualize God’s word making it fit our need rather than allowing it to change our thoughts and behaviors. We change the practical teaching of God’s word so we can use it in whatever way to fit our need.

This is the case regarding our verse today as it applies to our coming together in church.

“And they shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed. Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you.” (Deuteronomy 16:16b-17)

God commanded that when we come together we give as He has blessed us, and that begins with the tithe.

But instead look only at the part that says, “As I am able,” and determine that at this present time we’re not able. And yet at the same time we’re able to buy things that aren’t necessities, or attend worldly functions that are not inexpensive. We have enough money for the things we want or want to do, but we never seem to have enough for the Lord’s house or for His work.

And so we come to church empty handed.

When King David was offered the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite and the sacrifice for nothing he said, “I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” (2 Samuel 24:24)

When we come into the Lord presence, expecting Him to bless and help us, let’s not come empty handed. To come empty-handed would in essence be using God, which insults His goodness and holiness.

Please don’t get me wrong. This isn’t a message trying to get you to give more money. Rather it’s a message about being everything God has called you to be.

There’s a blessing when we give unto the Lord as He commanded. Not only will He open up the windows of heaven over our lives, but He’ll also rebuke the devourer who is stealing our blessing away. (Malachi 3:10-11)
