Our New Name In Heaven

There’s more than just viewing ourselves as God has designed us here on earth. There’s eternity, and in eternity God has a new name for us. It’s His name, and who we will be for all eternity.

“To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” (Revelation 2:17)

“And I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.” (Revelation 3:1)

In biblical times names meant something. They spoke of a person’s character. We also see God giving people new names to match their new role and/or responsibility.

It began with Abram and Sarai. God changed their names to Abraham and Sarah, which according to His description said they would be the father and mother of many nations. (Genesis 17:5, 15-16)

God changed Jacob’s name, which meant deceiver, to Israel, or one who prevailed with God. (Genesis 32:28)

The name God changed that holds the greatest significance is when Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, which means, “rock” (Matthew 16:18). This is significant because Jesus gave Peter one of God’s own names. (Deuteronomy 32:3-4)

It’s such a name we’ll receive in heaven, a new name that not only represents our new nature, but also God’s new name representing our new relationship with Him.

The Bible records God’s many names revealing not only His nature, but also His relationship to humanity and His people. But there’s a name that’s missing; a new name God will identify Himself with us in heaven.

Therefore in heaven we’ll receive two new names. The unique name God will give to us alone, (Revelation 2:17), and His new name linking us to Him for eternity, (Revelation 3:12).
