The Finger of God

“The magicians so worked with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not. So there were lice on man and beast. Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, ‘This is the finger of God.’ But Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them.” (Exodus 8:18-19)

God was in the process of delivering His people from their Egyptian bondage. Up to this point the magicians were able to duplicate the signs/plagues that the Lord worked through Moses, but now they couldn’t, because Satan’s power is no match for the power of God. It isn’t even close.

Satan had fooled them into thinking they had power, but when they saw true power and a miracle they couldn’t duplicated or explained away, they finally had to face the reality of a living God who moves on behalf of His people.

But beyond this, they realized this was only just a finger of God’s might and power. Can you imagine if it had been more? In fact, God brought this reality forth to Pharaoh. Speaking for the Lord Moses said, “If I had stretched out My hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, then you would have been cut off from the earth.” (Exodus 9:15)

Instead it was God’s finger so He could show not only His power, but also His grace and mercy in the midst of His judgment.

We live in a skeptical world, especially when it involves belief in the Lord and His Son, Jesus Christ. Through scientific advancements humanity has tried to duplicate or explain away the miracles of the Bible, and those happening today. But then they run straight into miracles that cannot be duplicated or explained away.

They talk about them being miracles, but are less honest than the magicians of Pharaoh’s court, because they won’t admit to the existence of God. For them there is no “finger of God,” and like Pharaoh they harden their hearts heaping further condemnation upon themselves.
