Vital Connections

Solomon says “Two are better than one … If one fall down, his friend can help him up … Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9a, 10a, 12a)

Today’s story comes at the time when King David was once again at war with the Philistines, and while David led the army he was exhausted due to the constant fighting. Seeing David’s obvious weakness, the giant, Ishbi-Benob, Goliath’s son, tried to take advantage and kill David in battle. (2 Samuel 21:15-17)

To say David was exhausted is an understatement. The word means David was so tired and weary that all he wanted to do is escape, to get out of there, to fly away and vanish. In other words, David had fought so hard and for so long that he was ready to cash it in.

Against Goliath David fought valiantly, winning the battle with just a small stone, but now he couldn’t even lift a finger to fight Goliath’s son.

But Abishai, one of David’s commanders, and cousin, stepped in and killed the Philistine giant.

This is how many within the body of Christ feel. They’re tired and weary, exhausted to the bone with the constant battles, and Satan sees our weakness and tries to exploit it.

Therefore, it’s absolutely vital we make these vital connections with our brothers and sisters in the faith. When we’re so weary, when life’s battles have us at the end of our rope and all we want to do is escape, to fly away, to cash it in, that’s when we need an Abishai, a brother or sister in the faith, one we’ve made this vital connection with to come alongside and help us defeat the enemy of our soul, Satan.

This is why the church is essential in a believer’s life. It’s where these vital connections are made and nourished, where we can help each other through the battles of life as we travel upon this road of faith.
